Paying it Forward with Ketogenic

The purpose of this podcast is to simply pay-it-forward. Sharing the wealth of information and experience we’ve gained in the past several years will help anyone getting started. One friend and the internet virtually changed our lives, being a resource to a healthy and hearty keto lifestyle.  After years of the keto diet we haven’t looked back once!

Low-Carb / High Fat (Keto Diet)

“Excess sugar is stored short-term in the liver as glycogen, and finally is stored as fat in the long-term.”

The ketogenic diet is a very low carb, high fat diet. In many places it’s simply abbreviated as a LCHF diet. The human body is powered by glucose, which is essentially sugar. The body can very easily convert the sugar we eat, typically fructose or sucrose (aka. High fructose corn syrup and table sugar) into glucose for energy.  The excess sugar is stored short-term in the liver as glycogen, and finally is stored as fat in the long-term.

By starving our body of sugar and carbohydrates, which are also broken down into glucose in the body, our body will turn to protein. Protein is the building block of muscles in our body, however excess protein is, you guessed it, converted to glucose for energy.

In the absence of all of this, with the exception of a moderate amount of protein to maintain muscle mass, the body can use fat as energy. The liver will not actually convert the fat into glucose, but instead into ketones, hence the name of a “ketogenic” diet. Commonly shortened as “keto” diet.

Health Benefits Galore?

There are many health benefits to using ketones as an energy source instead of sugar and carbohydrates, including lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol (more on this later), reduced blood sugar levels, reversing effects of type II diabetes, heart burn, acid reflux, indigestion and the list goes on and on.

The podcast concludes with advice on how to achieve small measurable goals, which lead to hour-by-hour success, daily success, weekly success, and ultimately convert a simple diet program into a long-term healthy lifestyle.
